Colts To Host First-Ever NFL Regular Season Game in Berlin’s Historic Olympic Stadium
The NFL today announced that the Indianapolis Colts have been designated to host a regular season game in Berlin, Germany at the historic Olympic Stadium during the 2025 season.
The NFL played five exhibition games (1990-94) at Olympic Stadium, but this will be the first regular season game in Berlin. The stadium played host to the 1936 Summer Olympics, which featured the groundbreaking achievements of American track star Jesse Owens.
Beginning in 2025, the league can schedule up to eight regular season games internationally. Each team is required to play a game as the designated team at an international site at least every eight seasons. The Colts will still host eight regular season games and one preseason game at Lucas Oil Stadium in 2025.
This will mark the Colts’ second regular season game in Germany and their first since securing marketing rights in Germany and Austria through the NFL’s Global Markets Program. The Colts are the first NFL team to play multiple regular season games in Germany. The Colts have previously played games in Mexico (2000 preseason), Japan (2005 preseason), Canada (2010 preseason) and England (2016).
Additional details, including date and opponent, will be confirmed as part of the league’s full schedule announcement this May.
“The NFL is making history in Berlin, and the Colts are proud to be part of this landmark event in one of the world’s most historic cities,” said Colts Owner & CEO Jim Irsay. “The NFL has become a global brand, and we’re looking forward to growing American football in Germany and expanding Colts Nation’s footprint around the world. This game also provides a unique opportunity for our local Indiana partners to engage with German businesses, customers and fans this season and in the future.”
The Colts have existing ties to Germany and its neighbor Austria, including:
· The Colts played in Frankfurt, Germany on Nov. 12, 2023, defeating the New England Patriots.
· Current Colts tackle Bernhard Raimann hails from Vienna, Austria.
· Current Colts safety Marcel Dabo is from Reutlingen, Germany.
· Former Colts linebacker Björn Werner, who was selected by Indianapolis in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft, hails from Berlin and is the official “Colts Ambassador” in Germany and Austria.
“It was great to see the Colts go 1-0 on my home turf in Germany in 2023,” said Werner, an NFL expert for RTL on German Free TV and co-founder of the German media company Bromance Sports. “Now, hosting a game in the historic Olympic Stadium in Berlin is the next big step. I’m pumped to see how we can keep growing the game, not just in Germany and Austria, but all over Europe. Let’s go 2-0!”
